French is spoken by more than 200 million people on all five continents. The OIF (Organization Internationale de la Francophonie), an international organization of French-Speaking countries, comprises 77 member states and governments. French is second only to English for numbers of countries where it has official status (32).
French is the second most-widely learned foreign language after English, and the sixth most widely spoken language in the world. It is also the only language with English that is taught in every country of the world with 100 million students and 2 million teachers.
Marketable: The ability to speak French and English is an advantage on the international job market, as France is the fifth biggest economy and third-ranking destination for foreign investments.
Culture: French is the international language of cooking, fashion, theater, the visual arts, dance, and architecture. Fluency in French gives access to great workers of literature in the original language, as well as films and songs.
Opportunities: Speaking French opens up study opportunities at renowned universities and business schools located in France, ranked among the top higher education institutions in Europe and the world.
The OTHER Language of International Relations: French is the official working language of the United Nations (UN), the International Red Cross, the European Economic Community, the European Union (EU), the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the International Olympic Committee, the International Labor Organization, Amnesty International, and Doctors without borders (MSF). French is the language of the three cities where the EU institutions are headquartered: Strasbourg, Brussels, and Luxembourg.
France is the most visited country in the world with 75 million tourist every year. In the United States, French is the number four native language and the second most taught second language after Spanish. After English and German, French is the third most widely used language on the Internet, ahead of Spanish.
French is a good base for learning other languages, especially romance languages (Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian) as well as English, since 50 percent of current English is derived from French.
The Language of Love and Reason: French is called the language of love and it is also an analytical language that structures thought and develops critical thinking, which is are valuable diplomatic skills.
Italy is a beautiful country visited by millions of tourists every year; however, Italian is not only a language for the would-be tourist, but is also widely popular in Pennsylvania and New-Jersey, where it’s the third most spoken language after English and Spanish.
The gift of speaking or learning a foreign language will last a lifetime. Children from a very young age can distinguish the differences in sound from every language in the world. The sooner children are exposed to a foreign language, the better it is; they can become fluent in that language, speaking and reading it without an accent.
Learning a different language is not that difficult, but it takes time and the process can help you understand yourself better. It is impossible to cheat--you get in return what you invest into it. You will also appreciate and notice the things that are often lost in translation. Your interaction with people of different cultures will go deeper.
With 329 million native speakers, Spanish ranks as the world’s number two language spoken identified among native language speakers. Spanish has at least 3 million native speakers in each of 44 counties, making it the fourth most widely spoken language behind English (112 countries), French (60 countries) and Arabic (57 countries).
